Chenab:The River Of Love

यूं ही नहीं कहते, ये चिनाब का दरिया है, ये इश्क से भर्या है||

Oh the callus moon river emits cascades of tragic love stories! On its bank Ranjha played his flute,Heer transcended into a devotee. The tranquility witnessed and immortalized their gory, A love that couldn’t surpass drowned in the moon river,picturesque.

The volatile course stench of tragic lovers playfulness and death; The cold perennial swallowed Sohni as she swam to meet her beloved, Cleaved to an unbaked pot bound to melt murshid too engulfed in the waves wrath, Right there across the moon river a lover was greeted with the corpse of his beloved.

Flowing seamlessly from one folklore to another the water broke. Birthed Sahiba who with sweetheart Mirza eloped; Unfortunate their love couldn’t escape the wicked trope, With Mirza Sahiba’s tragedy paradise,hell,purgatory it all doomed.

Flows for lovers connect all the tragedy, A heer in Sahiba and Sohni,Ranjha in Mahiwal and Mirza flowed along the perennial’s eternity.

The term Chenab is a combination of the words “Chen” (moon) and “aab” (river). Thus, Chenab, which literally translates as “moon river” in Persian, has been a key river in the history of South Asian mythology, silently witnessing historical romances in the past.It conjures up images of love as serene as the moon and daily life as vibrant as the rush of a raging torrent.The river of Love,Life and Death encapsulates our unending desire for human oneness. गंगा बनाए देवता, यमुना देवियां|आशिक मगर बना सके है केवल चेनाब दा पानी

I’ve always been fascinated with rivers,owing to the literature and folktales i’ve read, particularly on the Chenab and my fascination with the South Asian Folklore of Sohni and Mahiwal began when i first heard Noori sing “Paar Channa de” in Coke studio season 9. The hauntingly beautiful song describes how the volatile river swallowed Sohni as she swam to meet her beloved Mahiwal.Sohni clung to her matka (earthen pot) while the Chenab’s hungry waves slammed on her, devouring her.The matka was her last refuge unfortunately her sister in law replaced her clay pot with a defective one, having found out about her daily rendezvous with her beloved, Mahiwal, across the Chenab.Sohni realised the matka was slowly melting away and there was no escape from the Chenab, the river of love.Sitting across the river, Mahiwal saw his beloved drown,stuck she yearned for union with the divine reality.Mahiwal waited for Sohni, waited for his beloved beyond death for the ultimate union in eternity.

Few lines of the song goes like:-

यार नु मिलेगी आज लाश यार दी घड़िया  घड़िया आ, वे घड़िया! पार चना दे इससे कुली यार दी घड़िया  घड़िया आ, वे घड़िया! Tonight, a lover will be greeted
With the corpse of his beloved
Come on, clay-pot, let’s keep going Right there across the chenab river lies
My beloved’s hut
Come on, clay-pot, let’s keep going
